The Holy Land map itself occupies the centre and is surrounded by vignettes of the life of the Patriarch Abraham.

Very decorative map made by Abraham Ortelius, based on Ptolemy, but mostly on the bible, particularly for the illustrations of Abraham's life from his departure from Ur to his death, depicted in 22 medallions.

According to Nebenzahl: "The 'Wanderings of Abraham' is among the most elaborate of Ortelius' compositions. It demonstrates his combined skills as a cartographer and an artist, and his accomplishment as an historian."
